End of an Era - August 2020

V.W.Bro. Ian Douglas Nairn PGJO. PAsstProvGM.

One of our much loved Mark Masons has retired from his office after serving 9 years as Asst PGM, taking that high position way back in 2011,  he has been a dedicated member of Keith’s Team since 2015 and before that when VW Peter Connolly was the PGM, during that time he must have attended countless Installation Meetings with numbers running into hundreds along with many other duties whenever he was called upon.
Lead by Example
For those of us who have been lucky enough to be present at any Social Boards where Ian has delivered either a Toast to the newly Installed WM or any kind of response speech, you will know what I mean when I say they are always superb, his wit is second to none. Always very clever, interesting and usually full of fun whether it be themed around the new Lodge officers, the Lodge, or perhaps the local area or a topical news item, sometimes he has fun in highlighting something about our own PGM, which he always delivers with a twinkle in his eye.

Always funny but never offensive, how can we ever forget the time at the Provincial Grand Lodge in Southport when he produced several masks he’d had specially produced of the PGM, Keith of course joined in as we all lined up for a “guess which is the real PGM” see the picture below. (it’s a good job we have a great PGM)

Ian will perhaps have a bit more time now for some of his favourite pastimes which include Crown Green Bowling and taking his large dog for long walks. His Dog is called Marzipan and he spends hours in a workshop at the back of his house building steam engines, I believe it’s 5” gauge, now that’s another talent. One thing I do know about Ian is he used to Rallye Ford Escorts just like myself, I bet he’d still like to be at the wheel just as I would.

I am ready for that
It is always a pleasure for myself to be in his company as it is for all the West Lancs Mark Masons as well as members of the RAM, his knowledge of all things Masonic is outstanding, and he is always ready to help with first class advice for anyone who may need it.

I’m sure we all wish him and his family good health and happiness especially during this terrible time of the World wide Pandemic which we find ourselves in, once it passes and they produce a Vaccine, let’s hope  things will get back to some kind of normality including our Mark meetings and that we will have the pleasure of Ian’s company once again.
